El Joe Arroyo y su gran legado se oye hoy en siete voces
Sergio Vargas y el Canario, entre otros, hacen sus versiones de temas del Joe en el disco de Sura.
Fue en la entrega de un premio Grammy Latino; “en el 2006 o 2007, en Houston, Texas, nos hospedamos en el mismo hotel, donde estábamos varios colombianos, que la verdad era el único hotel que tenía cupos ya muy cerca del evento y quedaba lejísimos de todo, y entonces nos vimos en el ascensor. Él iba con su esposa y me dice: ‘Ajá, tú eres el tipo del Factor X’, y nos pusimos a hablar de cuanta cosa, de sus pintas, del programa… Siempre que pienso en él lo recuerdo especialmente ese día”, sostiene Gaviria.
El productor, sin embargo, afirma que lo conoció “tarde. Desde chiquito sabía que existía, lo que pasa es que para mí, conectarme con las músicas tropical, folclórica y vallenata fue un proceso más lento porque vivía por fuera. Siempre me gustaron Pa’l bailador y Tania, pero cuando me fui acercando a su creación empecé a entender su trabajo y a ratificarlo como un personaje único”.
Y tal vez por esa cheveridad eterna del Joe, cuando pensó este disco para el 2020, queriendo algo alegre y fuerte a pesar de la pandemia, la conexión con los artistas escogidos fue fácil. Estos fueron Sergio Vargas, Víctor Manuelle, Cabas, Wilfrido Vargas, Kinito Méndez, Eddy Herrera y José Alberto, el Canario.
“Los llamé, les hice la propuesta y les expliqué que sería un disco hecho ciento por ciento en la distancia, armando equipos en Colombia (Bogotá, Barranquilla y Santa Marta), Miami y República Dominicana. La logística fue divertida pero difícil. No me gusta no estar presente porque es muy distinto cuando estás oyendo cómo toca un percusionista o cómo van los acordes, o que se te ocurran cosas. Cualquier proyecto a distancia puede perder su potencial, no musicalmente, pero puede suceder. Sin embargo, en este siempre hubo un norte claro y una gran energía”.
Las charlas con los artistas fueron muy orgánicas porque todos saben del gran valor del Joe Arroyo como músico, de su ‘joeson’, de su encuentro con África y sus sonidos (de hecho, él se sentía un príncipe africano) y de todo lo que generó y dejó con su música.
La lista de canciones se redujo de 20 a 7, y para Gaviria lo más importante es que los artistas no solo fueron generosos con su tiempo, sino con la iniciativa de la Fundación Sura: por la descarga de cada canción de plataformas, la entidad dona un peso para apoyar a la Fundación Banda de Baranoa y preservar el legado cultural a través de la música.
En Barranquilla me quedo (Víctor Manuelle), A mi Dios todo le debo (Cabas), Te quiero más (Wilfrido Vargas), El negro Chombo (Eddy Herrera), Por ti no moriré (José Alberto, el Canario), Pa’l bailador (Kinito Méndez) y Sabré olvidar (Sergio Vargas) son las canciones escogidas.
“Uno empieza a imaginarse un disco y un repertorio ideal con los artistas ideales. El Canario, por ejemplo, no tenía en su radar Por ti no moriré, pero de una dijo que sí. Además, él es un hombre superorganizado que guarda todo y me mostró un afiche que tiene de un concierto suyo con el Joe. Eso fue genial”.
Con Eddy Herrera, cuenta Gaviria, había varias propuestas de canciones. “Ya cuando tuvimos claro que estaba a bordo, en una conversación con Milton Salcedo, un arreglista fenomenal que aparece liderando un piano increíble, oímos El negro Chombo y dijimos que se iba a morir con ese tema, y así fue”.
Víctor Manuelle, por su parte, quería P’al bailador, pero Kinito Méndez (merenguero) la pidió. “Yo no soy salsero, pero la hago sonar”, le dijo a Gaviria. “Entonces le dimos a Víctor En Barranquilla me quedo y salió muy bien”, cuenta el productor.
En esta especie de ajedrez para que las canciones quedaran con quien debían estar, Gaviria pensó que a Cabas A mi Dios todo le debo le quedaba perfecta. “Con Ana María él encontró la forma de enfrentarse al folclor, entonces estaba en un terreno similar”.
En cuanto a los temas que interpretaron Wilfrido y Sergio Vargas, Gaviria miró con lupa. “Había un mambo de saxos en Te quiero más, que suenan mucho a lo que Wilfrido hace, y Sabré olvidar fue para Sergio Vargas”.
Hoy, José Gaviria, a punto de empezar de nuevo como jurado de Factor X, programa que se lanza el próximo 16 de enero, se siente satisfecho con este proyecto.
“El Joe fue un explorador, uno de los personajes más creativos que ha tenido la música. Hizo proyectos con Fruko, tuvo su época de oro, tomó prestadas ideas e hizo un experimento sonoro que lo puso en el pedestal de los geniales”.
Y agrega: “Es de esos artistas que, además de su legado, su presencia en tarima era una locura. De esa manera, la gente única se vuelve eterna, gracias a lo que fue y lo que hizo”.
Su idea es seguir adelante con este proyecto de Sura, del que ya ha hecho discos de boleros, con 10 mujeres, un homenaje a Rafael Escalona y otro a Juan Gabriel, entre otros.
